The HERO Project is a community-based, media-driven, child sexual abuse prevention program designed to educate and motivate adult community members who are not legally mandated to report child sexual abuse to call the 24-hour HERO Hotline if they suspect child sexual abuse.

The mission of the HERO Project is to reduce the incidence of child sexual abuse by increasing awareness and encouraging reporting, - especially by persons who are in a position to protect a child, such as parents, relatives, friends, neighbors.

The HERO Project was first launched in 1997 by a collaboration of human service and health care providers, county agencies and private industries in Westmoreland County and has since been piloted in Dauphin, Perry, Lebanon, Philadelphia, Clearfield, and Lawrence counties. In 2003, the HERO Project was formally evaluated in Westmoreland County; evaluation of that project showed a 22% increase in hotline calls during the period of highest media saturation. HERO has also been recognized as a “promising practice” by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
You can be a hero today. If you suspect that a child is being sexually abused, get help. Please contact your local children and youth agency or call the HERO hotline, 1-877-874-HERO 1-877-874-4376).
The HERO Project is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape.
